Assessment
Assessment of a child’s speech, language and communication skills can help to identify a child’s specific needs and will usually involve; taking a case history with a parent/carer, formal or informal assessment, observation of the child in the setting, discussion with staff and summary report and recommendations.

Education Health Care Plans Reports (EHCP’s)
StartRight Speech Therapy has many years of experience writing reports for EHCP’s and reports can be produced in adherence with national guidelines.

Prioritising session with staff
We can offer a ‘prioritising’ session in your setting with staff members in order to help identify which pupils are most in need in their class and give immediate support and strategies.

Screening
We can screen a whole class or select group of children in your Early Years Foundation Stage, KS1 or KS2 setting in order to identify the children most at need using nationally recognised screening tools. We can also train staff to screen and work with them to identify those children most at risk, those that may need a more short-term intervention to help them ‘catch-up’ or those that may need onward referrals to other professionals.

Therapy
Can be offered individually or in a small group, depending on the specific needs of the children. Groups can be offered on attention and listening skills, phonological awareness, narrative or storytelling, social skills, inference and vocabulary. Therapy is usually most effective when carried out in conjunction with a Teaching Assistant, to enable maximum carry-over to the classroom. Programs for individual children with targets and resources can also be provided and reviewed as necessary.

Training
We can offer bespoke training to your staff on a range of topics including; typical speech and language development, how to make your classroom as language-friendly as possible and how to support children in their class with specific speech and language needs including social skills, vocabulary, comprehension, attention and listening, phonological awareness, speech sounds. As previously mentioned, StartRight Speech Therapy has specialist training in Elklan Speech and Language support for 5-11’s and Hanen ‘It Takes Two to Talk’ which supports parents and children with language delay and ‘More Than Words’ which supports parents and children who have social communication difficulties.
